BHOPAL: The process of implementing new radiation norms in Bhopal have come to a grinding halt as the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to keep a check on the radiation level of mobile towers throughout the city.
Interestingly, the BMC commissioner had claimed last month that a letter has been written to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) asking help for conducting a survey on the radiation from the mobile towers in Bhopal.
However, this exchange of letters in no in the knowledge of any other BMC official except the commissioner. "We are not aware of any exchange of letters between the two organizations," Pramod Shukla, additional commissioner BMC, told TOI. "There is no development, in the process of implementing new radiation norms," he added.
Due to this confusion, the new radiation norms of reducing the radiation from mobile towers from to 1/10 of the present radiation. This means radiation from the mobile towers needs to be reduced to 0.92 w/ sq. m (watt per square metre) from the existing 92 w/sq. m.
However, BMC commissioner Rajneesh Shrivastava said, "We have written to the mobile tower companies to reduce the radiation as per norms within a month. We are expecting the norms to be completely implemented by this month end.
